We had a similar system at the grocery store we shopped at in Belgium. You picked up a scanner gun when you walked in and used on everything you bought. When you checked out at the kiosk, you were printed a receipt which you took to a cashier. They either took your payment at that time, or informed you you’ve been selected for a complete review of your bags against the receipt. That random check was a great deterrent for shoplifting.
